Institute of Development Studies

Introduction

About IDS

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is a global research and learning organisation for equitable and sustainable change. In partnership with the University of Sussex, IDS is ranked first in the world for development studies by the QS University Rankings.

We provides cutting-edge research, learning and world-class teaching to transform approaches to equitable and sustainable development that helps ensure better lives for everyone, everywhere.

Learn with the best

Students and researchers at IDS come from all over the globe and are united in their commitment to help solve real-world problems such as disease, climate change and conflict.

IDS is at the forefront of development. Unlike in many traditional universities, our students are surrounded by researchers in action, all working for equitable and sustainable change. The quality of our teaching and the diversity of our international student body creates an environment that inspires, informs and enables the next generation of development champions to learn with the best.

Our degrees attract students who are working in INGOs, governments, civil society organisations, academic institutions, business and elsewhere who want to advance their theoretical and practical understanding of development, improve their career prospects, and make the world a better place.

Our graduates have gone on to take up senior positions in global organisations such as the World Bank and the United Nations, and in leading civil society organisations, as well as become Ministers and officials in national governments across the world. In 2018, alum Carlos Alvarado Quesada was elected as President of Costa Rica.
