QBM seeks to train a cohort of young scientists who, while firmly anchored in their home discipline, are well versed in multiple approaches and styles of thought. The goal is for the students to get comfortable in communicating across traditional boundaries, especially across the divide between experiment and quantitative theory – to become, in effect, scientifically bi- or multilingual. To this end, the school offers an integrated interdisciplinary Ph.D. program that consists of three main components:

An interdisciplinary research project which combines concepts and methods from different fields. A substantial program of formal course work with a general and an individual component centered around an interdisciplinary core course that covers key problems in bioscience from multiple perspectives. Further activities to enhance students’ other transferable skills to succeed in science as a competitive profession. ... [-]

Our graduate program offers a PhD in philosophy in four core areas, Molecular / Cellular Biology, Neuroscience, Ecology / Systematics and Evolution / Genetics. The PhD in Philosophy is offered through the Intercampus Doctorate Program of the University of Puerto Rico, administered by us.

The Department maintains close links with the Campus of Medical Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico, the Institute of Neurobiology, the Institute of Tropical Ecosystem Studies in the UPR-RP and the Department of Environmental Studies of the UPR-RP, which considerably expands the opportunities for our graduate students

The Department has modern facilities and laboratory resources and uses traditional and non-traditional model bodies to address various issues. In addition, the enormous diversity of the ecosystems of Puerto Rico and their easy access, translate into research opportunities in the Caribbean and continental neotropics. The University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras is a member of the Organization of Tropical Studies and students are encouraged to apply for OTS courses.... [-]

Overview

The School of Biological, Environmental, and Earth Sciences offers a program of study and research leading to a Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences.

Why Pursue Graduate Education in Biology?

Graduate study in the biological sciences leads toward the master's and doctoral degrees. The biology program typically has 60-70 full-time students pursuing graduate degrees, half of which are doctoral students. Graduate students join active research programs in molecular biology and microbiology, coastal and marine biology, and ecology and evolutionary biology. Faculty productivity in these areas results in extramural funding, scholarship of discovery and application, and graduate student activity.... [-]

Admission to the School of CMB

In addition to College of Engineering M.S. and Ph.D. requirements, the School of CMB has the following admission guidance and requirements:

Consideration is given particularly to the following components of the application: GRE and other test scores, undergraduate Grade Point Average, the student’s Statement of Purpose (SOP), and letters of recommendation. Quality students who have completed a B.S. degree in a non-engineering field such as Physics, Chemistry or Biology and who have completed mathematics through differential equations will be considered for admission to the School’s graduate program. These students typically are required to complete 3-4 additional engineering courses at the onset of their graduate education which will be determined by the School Curriculum Committee in coordination with the College Graduate Admissions and Advisory Committee. Change of major from M.S. to Ph.D.: a) each GRE score must be at least 150 (verbal and quantitative), b) Ph.D. entrance requirements must be met, c) adequate progress in the M.S. must be demonstrated, d) the undergrad GPA must be at least 3.0 (or its equivalent), and e) a compelling case for the change must be given. The Department offers the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry which is designed to better prepare doctoral-level chemists to enjoy productive careers in industrial laboratories, research foundations or academic institutions. In addition to the traditional Ph.D. curriculum, this program mandates that the student acquire the working knowledge of the type of research conducted in industry and of the constraints (both practical and philosophical) under which it is carried out.

To facilitate this, each student is required to spend one semester in an industrial or government research laboratory internship. This internship is obtained for the student by the Department and every effort is made to match the type of work and the company with the student's interests. This is an important part of the student's training that may also open up avenues for future employment. If a student already has industrial research experience, this internship requirement may be waived if the student so desires.... [-]

Program objectives

The study program offers a great deal of openness and flexibility, as students can actively shape their individual educational path according to their own interests and career orientations, with emphasis on theoretical, applied or computer-oriented mathematical knowledge received. With the support of mentors, each student gradually builds the necessary set of knowledge and research experience to independently manage highly demanding practical problems in their field of study. An important feature of the doctoral study program in Mathematics is its international comparability, openness, and flexibility: through the involvement of students in various scientific research and applied projects taking place at the faculty....
